GILES TRIBE ARCHITECTS AND URBAN PLANNERS
Giles Tribe Architects is a medium sized Australian architecture and urban planning practice. Established for over 40 years, Giles Tribe have undertaken a variety of residential, commercial, industrial, retail, urban design and master planning projects. The architects at Giles Tribe are constant in their commitment to realising their clients’ goals through personal attention, flexibility, responsiveness and creative energy.
There are four directors and a total staff of 20 staff at Giles Tribe, all of whom maintain “hands-on” involvement with each project. The firm is therefore able to establish individual teams with the appropriate skills and resources to meet individual project programmes and objectives.
In recent years, Giles Tribe Architects have engaged in a diverse range of residential and urban planning projects, many of which have been recognised with various awards, nominations and written publications. Giles Tribe Architects’ list of residential developments extends to include apartments, townhouses and individual dwellings as well as alterations, additions and heritage restoration.
Two of Giles Tribes’ most distinguished urban planning projects include the design and redevelopment of Cape Cabarita and Breakfast Point in New South Wales.
The 6.5ha design for Cape Cabarita comprises 250 single, townhouse and multi-unit dwellings, community facilities, an extensive waterfront reserve as well as various parks and areas of open public space. Giles Tribe was awarded the UDIA Best Master Planned Development 2000/2001 for this project.
Breakfast Point, situated on the Mortlake Peninsula, consists of 1865 dwellings in addition to several retail and commercial developments and outdoor community spaces. The Breakfast Point development also focused on the retention of nine heritage buildings. Accommodation ranges from conventional single dwellings along the eastern site boundary in addition to town houses and residential flat buildings of up to 9 storeys. Giles Tribe Architects were awarded the UDIA National Awards for Excellence 2005, amongst others, for this development.
The unique designs delivered by Giles Tribe continue to be recognised with The Landings voted the Best Seniors Community in NSW, winning First Prize in the UDIA NSW Landcom Awards for Excellence 2007 (Seniors Living category).
With construction of the ECHELON villas nearing completion and excavation for the ECHELON apartments completed, Giles Tribe’s dream for these exceptional boutique homes is soon to become a reality, representing the final stage of development at The Landings.
“This is really going to be a First Class product,” declares Ian McCaig of Giles Tribe Architects. “We consulted with a focus group of over-65 prospective purchasers and took all their feedback into account regarding convenience, aesthetics – everything from drawers under benches rather than cupboards to neutral colour schemes and of course plenty of light and space.”
“We found seniors are very internet savvy. One of the first questions they asked was, ‘Will we be able to get decent broadband?’ Needless to say we have made sure that every bedroom, as well as the living areas have been wired to provide for internet and phone access.”
“We’re very pleased with the generous interior space – even the second and third bedrooms are very large. We have designed the floor plans to take best advantage of access to light and sun and the glorious views over bushland, and have opened up the living areas so they all flow into each other, and out onto the balcony or terrace areas, which are large enough for entertaining.”
